Oak Park is a teeny tiny community nestled next door to Agoura Hills with Westlake Village on its' northwestern side.
As you exit the 101 at Kanan you'll drive north thru Agoura Hills, past the shopping centers on your left. You'll find our Century21 Adobe office located in the center on the southwest corner near the Vons. There's a Ralphs at the shopping center next door. Both are places most of us Oak Parkers do our weekly shopping not to mention renting videos at the Blockbuster, picking up prescriptions at Rite Aid and CVS. There are also some great places to eat like the Agoura Deli, the Alamo, the Italia Deli and more.
Continue until you get to Tamarind, the official starting point of Oak Park. You can't help but see the pretty monument in the median welcoming you not only to Oak Park, but to the county of Ventura.
The older part of the community lies east and west of Kanan and consists mainly of older single family homes. Mae Boyer Park is visible on the right, an Oak Park favorite for its annual community celebrations like easter egg hunts and aarts and craft festivals. There's great play equipment for little ones as well as tennis courts and a community rec center where a variety of classes are held in conjunction with the Rancho Simi Parks & Rec Department.
Right next door to Mae Boyer Park is Brookside Elementary School, a National Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished School. There are only 3 elementary schools in the acclaimed
Oak Park Unified School District: Brookside, Red Oak and Oak Hills. All three are award winning schools.
Continuing up Kanan you'll come to Sunnycrest, that's the popular Oak Park Dentistry for Children on the southeast corner. In case their name didn't make it clear enough, the mass of kids' playhouses on the lawn should give you a clue.
Inside is just as much fun; part of the reason this office is popular not just with Oak Parkers but with kids all over the Conejo.
Up ahead on the west side of the street is the Oak Park Community Gardens ;
a great place to grow flowers and veggies and community spirit! Not that this little town needs help with that! Football fans turn out en masse to watch the
Oak Park High School Eagles during the football season; there's a lot of wearing of black and yellow, the team colors. The high school, with a student body of just over 1000, was called 'one of the top 100 high schools in the country' by Newsweek in 2003. While the school has a reputation for turning out strong students, the kids have a lot of fun too, participating in sports like football, golf, baseball, tennis, cross-country and volley-ball to competing in Comedy Sportz; an innovative improvisational approach to comedy where teams are judged on their ability to make us laugh. Oak Park High School participates in a league with other local schools and it's all an offshoot of the original organization based in Hollywood. Check back for added shows and schedule changes:
COMEDY SPORTZ at Oak Park High School Pavilion Fridays @ 7:30pm
Book lovers will appreciate Oak Park's sleek and stylish library; another innovative creation: the library is shared by the high school and the community. Runners benefit from Oak Park High's squishy running track and there are public tennis courts on the campus as well. When it comes to tennis, there are plenty of places to play. Besides the high school and Mae Boyer park, you'll find courts at Deerhill Park and Indian Springs Park.
Behind the high school, you'll find the Medea Creek trail which wanders along beside the creek. The route is dotted with stops where the fitness-minded can challenge themselves and enhance their exercise routine. It's also a great place to simply take a walk with the dog...but watch out, the plentiful rabbits (especially in the early evening) can set off your dog's hunting instincts. At least that's what happens when our beagle Charlie gets a whiff. He goes absolutely nuts!
Follow the trail and it leads all the way down to Tamarind - the first street you encounter when entering Oak Park.
There is another park very close to the high school, Oak Canyon Park, where kids flock to feed the ducks and see the turtles baking on the banks in the California sun. You have to look quickly though because all too soon the turtles slip away and dip under the surface where they join the fish swimming happily in this sunny little spot. Be sure to pick up some duck feed instead of bread crumbs for the ducks to keep the ducks happy and the water clean. There's a gazebo nearby and barbecue grills where you can host a gathering. A trail leads deeper into the park -- there's also a road -- leading to a very civilized and very green area of the park where the hills are gently rolling and there's a large covered patio area filled with party tables. The nearby playground (and plentiful parking for guests) makes this one of the area's most popular kiddie's party spots.
Next door to the park, up on Kanan, you'll find the dazzling Oak Park Community Center and Gardens. This really lovely building and surrounding gardens and ponds has plenty of classes to enrich your life and is a beautiful spot for a special event.
Visit the Oak Park section of the
Rancho Simi Parks and Rec department to learn all about Oak Parks many parks and what they have to offer. You can stop by the Oak Park Community Center and Gardens (shown above) at 1000 Kanan to pick up a brochure or call 818-865-9304 for mor info.
If your little ones want to play but the day isn't sunny, Fo Fo Figglies at Kanan and Lindero (618 Lindero Canyon Rd # A
(818) 338-8880)is an amazing indoor playground. Moms can gather and sip a cup of coffee while the kids go crazy on the paraphanalia. If you know Bright Child in Santa Monica, Fo Fo Figglies was created by the same owner. And was so popular it spawned a kids' show!
Conveniently located in the same center is the uber-popular
Bean Scene, a local coffee house and busy gathering place. It's one of the few remaining indie coffee houses in the entire Conejo Valley; we love it for the coffee as well as for its contribution to our little community. They serve a yummy assortment of coffees and light snacks, drive up a.m. coffee service and occasionally, music on the patio. Local kids seem to favor the Bean Scene blast, a cool non-coffee blended beverage they find irrisistable. A big Bean Scene connection is the annual Walk To School day - the kids at Medea Creek Middle School meet at Bean Scene and trek all together down to the school on Doubletree. Usually one of the PE teachers and a few parents keep the kids in tow. Medea Creek Middle School, by the way, is the district's only middle school and besides being a National Blue Ribbon School, and California Distinguished School, Medea Creek is also a "Model School to Watch".
If you simply can't abide the indie scene, there's a Starbucks in the center across the street as well as some favorite local eating places like
Leilas and
Nico's Cafe and for Japanese fast food lovers, San Sai Grill. There too, you'll find the beautiful
Beau Image Salon & Day Spa - a super romantic place to treat your honey to a couple's massage!
Acclaimed schools, plenty of parks and open spaces, friendly people and housing opportunities ranging from the high-end Sutton Valley and Chambord tracts to a wide variety of older and new single family residences to affordable apartments at Country Oaks and Oak Park Apartments, Oak Park is a special place to call home.
